Many people have the common problem of feeling tired and unmotivated throughout the day. This is usually what separates average people from successful ones. people that are successful have most likely learned how to plan their days so they aren’t tired all the time and they will in return get much more done than the average person. I will admit this is something that I struggle with often and that is why I am trying to research it more and test out different ways to overcome it.
The first thing you can do to improve your tiredness is to work with your bodies sleep schedule instead of fighting it. Your body goes through multiple stages of sleep throughout the night. there are times during the night where you are in a deep REM sleep and if you try to wake up during this time you will feel very tired for most of the day. There are other times during the night where you are basically awake and if you get up then you will feel very well rested. these cycles usually take 1 hour and thirty minutes each and you can use some tools to help you keep track of them.
There is a website sleepyti.me which tells you what time you should wake up depending on when you go to sleep. While this site is useful for rough estimates I find it isn’t accurate enough for me. Instead, I use an app called Sleep Cycle and it keeps track of when you are in REM sleep and when the best time to wake you up would be, It does this by either measuring how much noise you are making at night or by measuring the vibrations of the phone. I usually let it listen to me because I don’t like keeping the phone on my bed at night.
Avoid Blue Light
Blue light is the kind of light that lets us know when to wake up. The bad thing is that all of out screens emit blue light that will prevent our bodies from winding down at night. So if you can you should try not to look at any screens for 2 hours before you go to bed.
If you enjoy using your devices at night and don’t want to give that up then you can also install applications to get rid of most of the blue light on your screen. I use a free software called flux on my Macbook and my PC. flux slowly tints your screen red the later it gets at night. You can fully customize the schedule to fit your needs. If you have an iPhone you can use the built-in night shift feature. Sometimes I want the brightness of my iPhone to be dimmer than its lowest setting. I looked this up and learned there is a way to do it using the zoom feature. So now whenever I triple tap the home button my phone gets super dim. You can use blue light to your advantage when you want to wake up by using smart lights or by using an alarm clock that is also a lamp. If that interests you then you can buy and learn more about one of these lamps here!
Get Enough Sleep
The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you don’t get enough sleep then you are definitely going to be tired the next day. But most people already know that you need sleep. But on the other hand, you should try not to get too much sleep because that also has negative consequences.
If you get too much sleep one night then the next night you will have a much harder time falling asleep. That’s how you get those nights where you feel tired but stay up laying in bed throughout most of the night. Oversleeping is one of the main causes of insomnia for a lot of people.
Try Using a Morning Routine
A morning routine is a great way to start your day off right and will definitely cause you to be less tired throughout the day. You can read a previous post about a great morning routine morning here.
Hopefully, all of these tips help you feel more awake in your day. I would recommend trying each one of these tips one at a time so you know which ones work better for you and then continue doing those.
